 Breadth and Depth

Our Primary curriculum builds a strong academic foundation, focusing on a wide range of core and foundation subjects to ensure holistic development:

Core Subjects

  • English: Advanced literacy development that includes reading, writing, phonics, listening, and comprehension to build strong communication skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL): Tailored support for non-native speakers, focusing on foundational literacy, reading, writing, listening, and comprehension to accelerate language acquisition and integration into the curriculum.
  • Mathematics: A rigorous approach to numeracy, problem-solving, and foundational concepts such as fractions, decimals, and early algebra, ensuring pupils develop strong mathematical reasoning.
  • Science: Inquiry-based and theoretical learning encourages pupils to use the scientific method, guiding them through observation, hypothesis, experimentation, and analysis to deepen their understanding of the world.

This approach ensures every pupil excels academically, regardless of their language proficiency or prior knowledge, while fostering confidence and curiosity in core subject areas.

Foundation Subjects:

  • ICT/Computing: Developing digital literacy and programming skills including the use of basic software applications to prepare pupils for a tech-driven world.
  • Social Studies
    • Humanities: Humanities focuses on exploring history and geography to cultivate a deeper understanding of the world. Pupils engage in topics such as significant historical events, cultural diversity, and environmental systems. Through storytelling, research, and map skills, children develop critical thinking abilities and foster connections to both global and local communities.
    • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education): PSHE emphasises personal well-being, social development, and health education, alongside an introduction to basic economic principles. Lessons focus on nurturing emotional intelligence, empathy, teamwork, and leadership skills. Children are encouraged to grow as responsible citizens who contribute positively to their school and wider community.
  • Art and Design Technology: Encouraging creativity and innovation through hands-on projects.
  • Music: Music nurtures creativity and self-expression through singing, rhythm exploration, and instrumental practice, building confidence, performance skills, composition, teamwork, and an appreciation for diverse musical styles and traditions.
  • Design Technology (DT): Pupils follow a structured approach called the Design Process, which is similar to the scientific method. This process guides them through problem-solving and project-based tasks, including identifying needs, planning, designing, creating, testing, and improving their projects.
  • Physical Education: Promotes physical health, teamwork, and a lasting passion for active lifestyles. Pupils participate in a variety of sports, including football, basketball, cricket, athletics, swimming, netball, badminton, and more, fostering skills, discipline, and collaboration.
  • Modern Foreign Languages: Introducing and strengthening communication skills in Chinese Language and Culture, fostering linguistic proficiency alongside an understanding of Chinese traditions and values.
  • Local Language and Cultural Studies: Ensuring a strong connection to Cambodian heritage through Khmer language studies and cultural exploration.

Our curriculum is further enriched by the Global Awareness Programme which introduces pupils to international and environmental themes from Year 2. This unique Bromsgrove initiative fosters global perspectives, critical thinking, cultural understanding, and a global outlook. Through engaging discussions, collaborative projects, and real-world problem-solving, pupils develop the skills and knowledge needed to become informed, responsible global citizens.

 Accelerated Progression

Our programme ensures pupils meet ambitious milestones, keeping them ahead of traditional benchmarks. To support every learner in reaching their potential, we offer intensive ESL classes and remedial support for children who need additional help in any area of their learning journey:

  • Phonics and Literacy: Pupils develop advanced writing and comprehension skills, with sentence fluency expected by Year 2. Intensive ESL support is available to strengthen English language acquisition for non-native speakers.
  • Mathematics: Core operations, including fractions, decimals, and early algebra, are introduced and mastered early, fostering strong numerical proficiency. Remedial support ensures foundational skills are reinforced for those who require extra assistance.
  • Science: Engaging, hands-on learning from Year 2, with experiments and application-based projects that develop investigative and analytical skills. Additional support is provided to help pupils grasp complex concepts effectively.

Our commitment to accelerated progression ensures that every child, regardless of their starting point, is equipped with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to succeed and thrive.

Handwriting and Presentation

Handwriting Programme: In the technology age, pupils organically become proficient at typing, but we also recognise the enduring importance of neat, legible handwriting, including cursive writing. Our structured handwriting curriculum ensures pupils build confidence in their written communication, progressing from foundational skills to polished personal styles by Year 6.

This balanced approach equips pupils with essential skills for both digital and traditional communication.
